Five family-friendly ideas that will suit both young and old

It can be hard to find an activity that will appease both young and old. However, the Hills District – and its surrounding areas – happens to be filled with family-friendly venues that will keep both young and old entertained.

Here are five ideas we’re sure will be enjoyed by all – from mum and dad, to tiny tots and teenagers.

  1. For the sports

The sporting family should head to Fred Caterson Reserve which has 58 hectares full of  sporting venues. There are five soccer fields, cricket practice nets, a baseball field, 10 tennis courts, a BMX track, remote control car track and a basketball stadium and a junior children’s playground, all in one area.

  1. For those that love the water

Tumble, slip and slide your way through an afternoon of fast water action. Waves Fitness and Aquatic Centre, boasts 40 in-ground trampoline mats and an outdoor Olympic-sized swimming pool.

  1. For animal lovers

Who doesn’t love to pet a koala? Featherdale Wildlife Park is home to the largest collection of Australian native animals in the world – koalas included. Not only is it a lovely hike through a park containing all things cute and fuzzy, scaly and deadly, it’s also an afternoon that can be extremely educational for the young ones as they encounter the unique properties of Australia’s flora and fauna.

Additionally, you could book your family into a Private Animal Encounter, where you’ll get up close and personal with your favourite native fauna.

  1. For the playful at heart

Playland at The Australian Hotel and Brewery contains a veritable jungle of slides, ladders, games and face painting. The venue is also available to host kid’s parties – which range from chocolate crackle and fairy bread fun, to an afternoon filled with sausage rolls and pizza bites. Best of all? It’s adjacent to the Bistro, the perfect space for mum and dad to wile the afternoon away to the tune of a few bevy’s.

  1. For the adventurous spirit

Why not pack the family into your car and take a drive around the Hills district, visiting the many historical sites and delights the area has to offer – such as the Price Morris Cottage, Melvy’s Wharf, and Aberdoon House. After all, how do you know where you’re going if you don’t know where you came from?
